One of Those People Who Speak Two Languages

Tuesday I decided not to post since I figured I wouldn't have much traffic around this place due to the Fourth of July celebrations. I guess I was wrong. I also went and played some tennis with Manfred. It was a good day for it, not too hot, but we both played pretty poorly, and agreed to blame it on the splotchy light flitering through the trees.

Wednesday I didn't have to go to Biology in the afternoon for the second week in a row. It was cancelled and replaced by Spanish for the others. We also got our Chemistry tests back today. The teacher asked to speak with me, since I got a 4 on the test. He assumed it was because I couldn't speak German (although I'd probably chalk it up to my ineptitude at the science of Chemistry), and told me that if I wanted to be "one of those people who speak two languages" that I'd have to work hard on my German skills. It was some very good advice, so I went searching for some helpful study guides. It helps when people organize things for me. I can be motivated when I want to be, but if nothing's in order, I get very little accomplished. So I found a few websites, including one that everyone here can use to increase your global and cultural awareness. Okay, probably not any of you who've had a German class in school, but for the rest of you: Essential German. I especially like the section titled "Food & Drink," because those things are about all we eat here. ;)

Also for those of you who cannot speak the German language, I've dug up a resource of Mark Twain quotes on the language, to keep you satisfied and relieved that you never did decide to venture into the grammatical mess the people I'm living with call a language. And so the first one:

"It is easier for a cannibal to enter the Kingdom of Heaven through the eye of a rich man's needle that it is for any other foreigner to read the terrible German script."
- photo autographed to Ed. Potzl, 2/1898; Notebook, 1898

If anybody would like to try and beat Parker to the draw on that math problem, they're welcome to it. Furthermore, and wishes, wants, desires, whatever I can do for anyone, just let me know.

I really don't think Dustin Hoffman did that good of a job portraying an autistic person... I didn't even understand that math problem, I have no idea what to look for.

How do they score tests in Germany. I assume that 4 wasn't very good.

For a front row seat to the 2005 Brainerd Lakes Area Fireworks, click on my blog. Well not really front row. But it could be worse.

On the youngest day I rise from the dead and immediately look after my most loved and when I can't find him then I lay myself back to sleep then I lay myself back to sleep. Heart's sorrow the eternity! Only Selbander (?) is salvation! And if my most loved doesn't come, I may not be in paradise, I may not be in paradise.

Some strange song, Josiah?

The "youngest" right away could also be translated at "recent." Selbander isn't in any dictionary I've seen, but "selb" means self and "ander" means "other" or "different."

Jason,
So is that correct that 1 is highest and 6 is lowest and a 4 would be about a D?

Doing any better in that class?

As you have mentioned in past entries, trying to pick up on new (especially scientific) terms and concepts in a different language would be, to me, next to impossible. So, I'm very impressed that you are tackling it. And I just don't say that due to the wonderful genetic advantage that you have!

Very self-aware of you saying you need things organized (hey, but what about your room and your closet normally!?!).

Getting warmer over here after a nice spell of nice days and cooler nights (and we still "wasted" water and showered every day). How about Germany?

Your brother is down in Missouri, so it is a very quiet house without you two boys (I mean men).

Is the Tour de France covered there?

Gotten in much more tennis? What has Manfred been suggesting - teaching you?

Are you all set for classes in September or do we need to be signing you up for something?

Enough questions. Please respond in English though.

Love you,
Dad

Mom here,
Tell us a bit more about the food. Have you tried leberkas or weisswurst? Actually what is weisswurst - a white sausage? Obviously I have been trying to read some of the tour books. In Berlin the main things I'd like to see are the Scholss Charlottenburg, the Agyptisches Museum (they have a bust of Nefertiti) and of course, check point Charlie and the museum there. Maybe we should figure out what all we want to see, so that may determine the number of days that we go there. Did you know Munich had 1.3 mil people in 1999? Heard anything more about the goings on in London? Do they think they had anything to do with the Olympics just being named there? Better than Paris for our sake anyway.
No AP scores yet... Dad is right, the house is very quiet. I even fell asleep this afternoon, which is very unlike me.
Love, mom

If the terrorist attacks had something to do with the Olympic bid likely they would have happened the day before, destroying London's chances. The attacks were extremely organized, and I'd say the culprits are either the IRA or the main branch of Al Queda (not some generic terror cell).

I think it was Al Qaeda and apparently so do the authorities as well. As far as the Olympics, I think it might very well have had to do with them. In the midst of celebration it was a "look what we can do and you can't stop us" moment.

I'm curious though, with two attacks now in Europe obviously as well as Sept. 11th, how are the Germans reacting? Do they just shrug it off as "not here" or are they getting a bit more aware since there have been a couple significant attacks that are likely Al Qaeda based and are closer to home?

English would be sweet (duh).
